Medet Shayakhmetov about shooting videos, freedom of expression and dislike to leave home
I am human. Artist. And of course, the director. Most of all my creative abilities appeared in directing.
“Clip maker” is a very strange word. How do you identify your profession?
Answering the previous question, I just wanted to say that I do not classify myself as one profession. I do not want to limit myself. It will be, first of all, wrong. And secondly, it will not be true. I write scripts, come up with concepts, shoot, mount, draw. For example, I can make a music video almost completely. But at the same time I call myself a director, because there is no more suitable word. And these are all shortcuts that you don’t want to hang on. Why limit yourself?
In 2020, modern man in general can only classify himself
to one profession?
It seems to me that for a modern person, one of the main talents for career development is the ability to communicate. Everything in the world now revolves around communication, and it is built on mutual understanding. And communication skill just implies that you can understand other people and convey your opinion to them in such a way that they also understand you. And it seems to me that you can learn to communicate with people all your life.
As for the creation of the clip on the iPhone, in principle, I have several such stories. For example, when we shot dancers in reflective costumes, we needed such an effect that the light from the flashlight played on clothes. We held a flashlight near the camera and shone directly from the lens, but this was not enough. Then I took the iPhone, which perfectly caught these glare with a flashlight on suits. And now there is a clip that has about 45 million views, and it has frames shot on an iPhone. There are still several clips for which I did post-production on the phone.
And it seems you can create a clip alone by restricting yourself to one iPhone. Technical skills at the level. And what else do you need to work on?
It’s hard for me to name one project as the most difficult, but there was a story when my childhood friend and I first acted as producers. We shot a video in Alma-Ata, and during the preparation for the project I painted a bunch of bold ideas, we had a rather large budget, and for the first time working on such a large-scale story was, of course, exciting. But everything turned out fine, I like the result.
Which clip was the most difficult for you?
Yes, of course, a modern smartphone is a whole media center, which has all the necessary functions. I take photos, shoot videos, write, call, read, play, relax, refresh some memories, listen to music. I always carry headphones with me. I have the first generation AirPods, and I am very pleased that Apple created such wireless headphones. It is very comfortable. I hope that over time they will add the ability to control the volume directly on the headphone.
Hearing that Medet is still using first-generation headphones, Apple Shop consultants at the Central Department Store offer him to try on new AirPods Pros with noise reduction. Because sometimes you want to adjust the volume of the surrounding world much more strongly,
not music on headphones.
Another project participant is photographer Volya Medvedev. His interview can be read on gq.ru

You said that you really actively use the iPhone in your work. Does it play a big role for you in life?
So, now I’ll open the screen time in the settings. If you believe the smartphone, then about 5 hours every day.
How much time do you spend on your phone?
The most necessary applications for me are an alarm clock, notes and weather. But most of the time I spend, of course, on social networks and instant messengers. A smartphone is a communication tool for absolutely everyone now.
Which applications are the most popular?
Yes, I just turn on airplane mode, turn the smartphone down and go about my business when I can afford it. At this time I read a book, watch movies, I can even just go outside, sit on a bench and watch the birds.
But do you manage to rest from the phone?
I will definitely find a way to tell everyone for whom it may be important that this happened. But in general I think that nothing terrible will happen. A smartphone is a necessary and important thing, but without it it is quite possible to live one day.
And what will happen if you forget your phone at home for a day?
A smartphone helps a modern person take risks. When you photograph something on the iPhone, you don’t have the feeling that you picked up an expensive camera that obliges you to give out some unbelievably high-quality professional shot. You shoot the way you want. No burden of responsibility presses you. The smartphone helps free the mind and gives freedom to the imagination. And it seems to me that if, for example, you draw in an application on a smartphone or write something in notes, it works the same way. And inner freedom is extremely important for self-realization.
I agree, a smartphone is a necessary thing. But why? More recently, without him.
